30+ years of dog training has taught us that there are four elements essential for the basic training of a finished dog. They are Dog, Owner, Birds, and Trainer. All four elements are needed for satisfactory development of an intelligent, obedient, and confident dog.”

Performance Training

As the hunting years go by, many people ask me about “tuning up’ there their dogs performance a notch. Yes we do that. You tell us where your field dog needs some improvement, whether we trained it or not, and we will set up some goals and a plan to get that dogs performance where you want it. Anything is possible: steadier on point, blind retrieve performance, better water performance, blind manners, the list can be endless. Contact us and we will discuss your needs and try to work it into your budget.

Field Problems – Gun Shyness - Force - Fetch Retrieving Training

Sometimes no matter you do and how hard you work your dog, something comes up that really throws a wrench into your hunting dogs performance, specifically gun shyness, failure to retrieve, or failure to handle. We can solve those problems for you. Call us or e-mail and we can talk about fixing these types of problem.

Training Hunting Dogs, Gun Dogs, and Retrievers

At Field N Marsh we emphasize to the dog owner the importance of using game birds in the training of your dogs. To be competitive on Mother Nature's playing field the owner must understand and further the dog's development by using game birds in the training.

Jeff Miller has trained gun dogs and field trial prospects for over 25 years. His experience has led to a training philosophy that encompasses the many styles and techniques he has observed over his lifetime association with dogs and trainers. All dogs and trainers are like people, different. Likewise, training approaches must change, just as breeding, hunting opportunities, and the environment our dogs live in has radically changed in the last 20 years.

Individualized dog training...

This is an outgrowth of this philosophy and training with game birds is a key component of the program. Once an owner and dog have gone through a program which trains with game birds the advantages become obvious. The key is to develop the dog's natural instincts without being adversely affected by pressure. Dog owners whose dogs have been with Jeff Miller are very pleased with the results.

We want to communicate to you and your dog, and to complete the circle while you learn with your dog. Your successful day a field, not just measured in game, but the whole experience, is our success.

Initial evaluation of your dog...

We will evaluate your dog for 10-14 days. If we see a problem area or a dog not ready for training, we will let you know. We like to start dogs at a minimum of 6 to 12 months of age. After the evaluation a timetable will be established for your dog. Our finished dog program for retrievers and pointers generally runs 3 months for a finished dog. Some dogs require less time, and some require more time.

During your dog's training period...

Weekly progress reports are communicated to you by phone, and at 2-4 weeks, you will work with your dog at a time convenient for you. If distance is a problem for an out of state owner, other arrangements can be made. We encourage biweekly owner - dog training sessions throughout the training period.

Following your dog's training...

When you and your trained dog go home, we'll make follow-up calls to track the dog's progress. We also encourage a tune-up month the following season to continue your dog's development. This will be at a special rate to return customers.

Your dog will respond to voice or whistle, be steady to wing, and shot, retrieve to hand on command. The dog will heel on lead and be under your control at all times. Retrievers will in addition have the ability to make land and water blind retrieves, drop, sit, and take hand or whistle signals in the field.

Obedience Training

Our obedience program dogs at the end of their training period will sit, stay, heel, come, and lay down on command in addition to being trained for admonishment with the word "no". We specialize in behavioral dog problem solving. We like to involve the complete household unit when possible in the training process. We will begin to train you with your dog usually at two weeks and thereafter until completion of the course.

We train all breeds for pointing, flushing, or retrieving. Jeff Miller is an accomplished waterfowl and upland guide and hunter, he knows what you need in the field. References are available from the owners of dogs that he has trained. From time to time puppies, started dogs and finished trained dogs are available for purchase.

Our kennels are located a short distance from Portland International Airport in Portland Oregon. Arrangements to pickup your dog at PDX can be made easily.
